A frequent issue we are asked about in the shop is joint pain. Whether caused by arthritis, injury, or autoimmune disease, joint pain is challenging and can seriously limit our activity and enjoyment of life. It is one of the most common forms of chronic pain that Americans suffer with – approximately 53 million adults with forms of arthritis alone!

The standard of care for any chronic joint pain will largely be focused on symptom management: painkillers and anti-inflammatories like NSAIDs or corticosteroids to reduce the inflammatory response and/or its symptoms. This brings us to where herbal medicine might be of assistance. Several herbs have long-standing use as both anti-inflammatories and analgesics (pain relievers), and are increasingly being proven effective in clinical studies. Here I share some of these herbs and a few products that we offer, but there are many more possibilities so come visit us for more personalized advice! And as always consult a medical practitioner for proper diagnosis, particularly if you are experiencing other symptoms in addition to joint pain.

Boswellia (Frankincense)

Boswellia serrata

This resin is a traditional Ayurvedic remedy for arthritis, as well as bursitis and tendonitis. It is both anti-inflammatory and analgesic and has been shown in several studies[1], [2] to reduce joint pain and increase mobility, both internally and externally. It may be taken individually or as part of a formula. This is often my first recommendation as I have personally experienced improvement in both my osteo- and autoimmune- related inflammation with it!

For a DIY soothing relief, try infusing a carrier oil with frankincense resin as described here.

Turmeric

Curcuma longa

This brilliant orange root is likely already known to you as it has become hugely popular and available in recent years, and with good reason! It is a highly effective anti-inflammatory and has been shown in numerous studies to reduce joint swelling and pain similarly to NSAIDs. It is also a part of the Joint Health Advanced formula linked above. Avoid in pregnancy or while taking blood thinners. Read more about Turmeric here.

Ginger

Zingiber officinale

Another powerhouse root, ginger is both painkiller and anti-inflammatory, as well as a warming circulatory stimulant – it will help get blood moving. It is often paired with Turmeric, as in Zyflamend, but can also be the star of formulas such as our Joints Ease tea. Read more about ginger here.

Chamomile

Matricaria recutita; Anthemis nobilis

Both German and Roman chamomile are sweet-tasting and -smelling anti-inflammatory delights. Chamomile has a history of long-standing use by herbalists for a wide variety of purposes as it is gentle enough for just about everyone, including children. Regular consumption of the tea has been shown to reduce arthritis inflammation, and massaging the (diluted in a carrier oil) essential oil into aching joints may reduce both inflammation and pain.
